A new Anacampseros L. species (Portulacaceae) from the central and northern Knersvlakte in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Anacampseros hillii G. Will., a new species, is described and the systematic affinities discussed. Line drawings and photographs are included. The new species belongs to a group of super miniatures including A. bayeriana S. Hammer, A. comptonii Pillans and A. scopata G. Will. Anacampseros hillii is restricted to quartz, pebbly pavements growing in full sun in the arid, harsh environment of the Knersvlakte. The dwarfed plants are more or less prostrate and hidden between quartz pebbles making them difficult to detect. Anacampseros hillii G. Will. sp. nov. A. bayerianae S. Hammer affinis sed foliis maioribus (4-6x3-5 mm) glabris non papillatis axillis sine pilis, staminibus usque ad 12 longerioribus (4.8 mm) et postremo seminibus trichomatibus prominentibus patulis distinguenda. Typus: South Africa, Knersvlakte, Western Cape, P. Desmet & A. Ellis in G. Williamson 6051 (Holo. BOL). Anacampseros hillii G. Will. is related to A. bayeriana but differs in possessing larger leaves (4-6x3-5 mm) which are glabrous and non papillate. The leaf axils are without hairs, the stamens are longer (4.8 mm) and number up to 12 and lastly the seeds have spreading, prominent thrichomes. The plants arise from single broadly elliptical tubers about 8x6-7 mm, occasionally in older plants, there are several basal, broadly elliptical tubers up to 20x11 mm. Usually there is a single apical branch up to 8x4 mm but occasionally double branches occur, stem and branches are below ground level. Leaves perennial, apical, always 2 per branch, prostrate to sub erect, ovate to cordiform from above, epetiolate, succulent 4-6x3-5 mm and 2-3 mm in cross section, epidermis with a mat texture, light green with reddish tinge. Sepals ovate 3x3 mm, light green with a dark green succulent, saccate base enveloping base of underside of petals. Flower solitary, when open horizontal, 11 mm in diameter on an erect to suberect, glabrous reddish peduncle up to 15x0.8 mm; petals broadly ovate with a rough surface,更多
