Changes in peripheral levels of nitric oxide and endothelin-1 in migraine patients

abstractsObjective To explore the changes in peripheral levels of nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in migraine patients during attack and interictal period. Methods Serum levels of NO and ET-1 were detected by spectrophotometry and radioimmunoassay in 45 patients with migraine attack and 41 patients in the interictal period. The results were compared with those from healthy subjects. Results Levels of NO and ET-1 were significantly higher in the patients with attack than in the healthy subjects. NO levels decreased significantly in the interictal period, being close to those from the healthy subjects, while ET-1 levels remained at a higher level, which had no significant difference as compared with those in the interictal period, but significantly different from the normal group. Conclusions Peripheral levels of NO and ET-1 levels obviously elevate in migraine attack; NO levels return to nearly normal interictal periods while ET-1 levels remained at a higher level. Increased levels of NO and ET-1 and disbalance between them are an important cause of migraine attack.
