Variables influencing preoperative visual function expectations of cataract surgery patients and their correlation with disease uncertainty

abstractsObjective:To analyze the factors influencing preoperative expectations of visual function in cataract surgery patients and explore their correlation with disease uncertainty. Methods:A total of 511 cataract surgery patients treated in Jinan Second People's Hospital from January to December 2023 were selected as the research sample by convenience sampling.Relevant data were collected using a general information questionnaire. The Chinese Version of Visual Function Index-12 (VF-12-CN scale) was employed for the survey. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the associated factors of preoperative visual function expectations in cataract surgery patients, and Pearson analysis was conducted to explore the correlation between patients' disease uncertainty and preoperative visual function expectations. Results:The investigation results indicated that the average preoperative visual function expectation level score of 511 patients who underwent cataract surgery was (71.48±8.22) points. The results of Pearson analysis showed that there were positive correlations between patients' preoperative visual function expectations and the total score of disease uncertainty as well as the scores of each dimension, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.434 to 0.754( P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that age, preoperative education, the degree of impact on visual function, self-efficacy, and previous surgical experience were all independent factors affecting the preoperative visual function expectations of patients undergoing cataract surgery( P<0.05). Conclusions:The preoperative visual function expectation level of cataract surgery patients is closely related to age, preoperative education, the degree of visual function impact, self-efficacy, and previous surgical experience. Moreover, the level of disease uncertainty also shows a significant positive relationship with the preoperative visual function expectation. Therefore, in clinical practice, measures such as preoperative health education and psychological support for patients should be strengthened to help them establish positive surgical expectations and beliefs.
