abstractsIt has been proposed that the liver possesses special properties of immune tolerance, liver allognrafts can be accepted indefinitely in some species across major histocompatibility complex (MHC) barrier without immunosuppressive treatment to recipients. On the basis of experimenta] studies and clinical evidence, we re-view the possible mechanisms which may contribute to liver transplantation tolerance. These mechanisms are not mutually exclusive and transplantation tolerance may be the results of several of these mechanisms operating simultaneously or sequentially.
