Study on the development and assistance of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine in the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region

abstractsTraditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) in WHO Western Pacific Region boasts a rich legacy, widespread acceptance, and a dynamic trajectory of growth in teaching, research, and trade. The steadfast support from Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, and China—in the form of generous funding, skilled medical teams, and impactful educational and free clinic initiatives—has elevated the standard of TCIM in the Western Pacific and amplified the global prestige of their national medical traditions. Despite this progress, TCIM still faces significant challenges, including insufficient protection of its valuable heritage, gaps in regulation, a shortage of evidence-based research, and a pressing need for skilled professionals. TCM plays a central role in the development of TCIM in the Western Pacific. The future development and communication should learn from the experience of Japan, the Republic of Korea and India in standardization, branding, financial support and education promotion to secure stronger intellectual property rights, lead the creation of international standards, champion the recognition of its intangible cultural heritage, embrace innovative funding models and communication strategies, and deepen trilateral cooperation among China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, in order to further drive the localization and globalization of TCM and enhance its international influence.
