abstractsIn 1984, Song Yeguang et al. published an article titled "The free thigh flap: a new free flap concept based on the septocutaneous artery" in British Journal of Plastic Surgery, detailing the anatomical basis, surgical design, perforator localization methods, and clinical applications of the anterolateral, anteromedial, and posterior thigh flaps. This article is regarded as the first English-language report of the anterolateral thigh flap worldwide, and has had a profound impact in the field of surgery. Nowadays, the anterolateral thigh flap has become one of the most commonly used flaps in reconstructive surgery, hailed as the "workhorse" flap. On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Chinese Medical Association and the 41th anniversary of its publication, this article briefly reviews the publication history, main content, and subsequent impact of the original paper. A brief biography of Professor Song Yeguang is included to commemorate the pioneer, who made significant contributions to the research of this flap.
